Welcome to this Blog!

Japanese Literature in Translation
English amateur translations of Japanese classics under Creative Commons license

We are…

... two young European women who simply cannot have enough Japanese literature in our lives. So we decided to translate some for our enjoyment - and yours.

Our names are Jennifer (Japanese-to-English translator, JLPT N1 as of Apr 2018, current majoring in East Asian Economics & Politics at Ruhr University, Germany) and Irene (proofreader, language and communication consultant, MD in Specialized Translation, alumna of the University of Bologna, Italy).

This blog is going to be...

… a collection of amateur translations of Japanese classics under Creative Commons license. We plan to start out with a few short stories by Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, and will later move on to more of our favorites, including Dazai Osamu and Oda Sakunosuke. We hope that you will enjoy reading our translations as much as we enjoy making them.

You are…

... someone who loves Japanese literature, and reads it for leisure or academic interest.

... someone who loves Japanese culture and seeks to approach Japanese literature through modern English-language translations that will read smoothly.

... an enthusiast of anime, manga, or videogames featuring characters, stories, and situations inspired by Japanese literature (Bungou Stray Dogs, Bungou to Alchemist, AkaSeka, etc.) who wants to know what it's all about. We welcome you as our brethren.

... someone who will not steal our work and sell it or otherwise use it for profit.

Special thanks to Umeshiso (梅しそ @69ene), our native Japanese speaker for grammar, vocab and research help!
